07 Jun, 2009

The Federal Board of Revenue has directed the collectors of sales tax to maximise efforts for increasing sales tax and federal excise duty collection in remaining days of June 2009 for meeting assigned targets for 2008-09. In this connection, the FBR has issued instructions to the collectors of sales tax here on Saturday.
According to the instructions, the FBR had assigned sales tax and federal excise monthly targets to each collector. The performance of the collectors would be judged on the basis of revenue collected during 2008-09. The collectors should also take steps for speedy recovery of arrears. The arrears related to the adjudicated amount accumulated after completion of adjudication and appeal process. The collectors should ensure maximum efforts for increasing collection in the remaining days of the current fiscal.
The total pending sales tax and federal excise duty (FED) arrears were approximately Rs 31 billion as on March 2009 for which a massive recovery drive was launched in the Large Taxpayer Units (LTUs) and Regional Tax Offices (RTOs).
The FBR had already started a large-scale exercise for recovery of arrears for improving revenue collection in 2008-09 and collectors have invoked relevant provisions of sales tax and excise laws for speedy recovery of arrears. The FBR has directed the collectors to expedite efforts for recovery of the outstanding arrears to meet the revenue targets for 2008-09.
