Guatemala's sugar exports doubled to 259,706 tonnes in May compared with the same month last year, the country's sugar producers association Asazgua said on Thursday. Asazgua said the wide month-on-month variations do not reflect the size of the harvest, but instead the date on which deliveries are requested.
During the 2008/09 harvest season, which began in November, Guatemala exported 823,701 tonnes, down 6.6 percent from the same period in the year-ago cycle. Guatemala is set to produce 2.22 million tonnes of sugar in the 2008/09 season, 4.6 percent more than the previous harvest, because of favourable weather conditions, according to Asazgua's forecasts.
