Entry into Sindh: IDPs would be hardliner Taliban if they are stopped, says Adeel

10 Jun, 2009

Condemning the move of the Sindh-based political parties for disallowing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from entering Sindh, ANP Senator Haji Mohammad Adeel on Tuesday warned that IDPs would be hard-liner Taliban if they are stopped from moving to other parts of the country at their testing time.
He was taking part in the debate in Senate on Swat operation with particular reference to the IDPs issue. He said that I am living in a troubled province and if I were asked to leave my house by the government and then anyone stops me from going to Punjab or Sindh, I would have no option but to join Taliban.
Haji Adeel referring to the miseries of the IDPs and refusal from some political forces of Sindh province to them said that it was injustice with these loyal Pakistanis who have left their houses for defending the country. "They are Pakistanis and have not come from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or any other country," he said, adding that he was much upset with the people and political parties of Sindh who shut the doors of the province over their own countrymen.
"If all the IDPs would convert into Taliban due to such rude attitude of the political parties then nobody would be safe in this country," the ANP Senator remarked. "Don't treat the Pushtoons as migrants as they are not Mohajirs they are the countrymen and have left behind everything in their homes for the sake of Pakistan." He strongly condemned the attitude of MQM, Sindhi nationalist leaders and some of the PPP leaders for not allowing the IDPs to Karachi and other cities of Sindh.
Haji Adeel said that though dialogue is the best mean to resolve the problems but the talks would be held in Swat and other parts of the Malakand Division after victory of the security forces in the ongoing war against militants.
He rejected the demand of some religious parties for holding dialogue with militants, saying it would not be done at this stage and that the dialogue could be initiated in Swat after victory in the current military operation and re-establishment of writ of the State in the troubled areas.
"Though dialogue is the best tool to settle the issues but this option couldn't work in the past." Now talks would be held after the army returns conquered." He asked JUI-F to initiate dialogue with Baitullah Mehsood, the chief of the Tehrik-e-Taliban, to restore peace in Dera Ismail Khan which he said is native town of Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman.
Adeel said everyone should support the military operation and the IDPs, adding that if armed forces were not emerged victorious no one would be able to sit peacefully in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and other parts of the country.
He said that in the past, due to wrong policies of the government, arms and ammunition worth $50 billion came to Afghanistan, the aftermath of which is still being borne by the Pushtoons. He also demanded investigation into the recovery of sophisticated weapons in Swat, which he said is a settled area of the Pukhtoonkhwa. He said it was during Musharraf regime, when MMA was in power in the province and this cache of arms found its way in Swat.
Professor Sajid Mir of the Jamat-e-Ahle-Hadees said that neither his party nor he himself backed the way of Sufi Mohammad to implement Shariah. We don't consider him innocent, he added. He said that the enemies of Pakistan were supplying arms and training to militants. He said that those should be clearly told that Pakistan would never facilitate them.
He said that the operation could have been averted by holding another round of dialogue with the Taliban. He said after the signing of Nizam-e-Adl Regulation, the Taliban should not have made advances to other towns and cities and instead they should have laid down their arms.
He said he and his party has always been against the political role of ISI, but supported the spy agency for defence of the country. JUI-F's Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri said that though the demand of Sufi Mohammad was valid but JUI-F has reservations over the way Sufi initiated the Nizam-e-Adl.
He said that all the accords that have been made in Pakistan in any context have not been honoured. He said that the issue of Lal Masjid and Swat were one and the same. PML-Q's S M Zafar said that the army by launching the operation was fulfilling its constitutional obligations as according to him the civilian government can invite the army in such situations. He said that Pakistan is in a state of war and stressed the need for unity to cope with challenges.
