Environmental pollution: 'comprehensive projects should be started to meet challenges'

Divisional Commissioner, Tahir Hussain has said that comprehensive projects should be conceived to meet the challenges of environmental pollution. He was addressing to a Seminar on "Monitoring of Surface Water Bodies in Punjab" organised by the environmental Protection Department Punjab in a local hotel.
Tahir said that the environment pollution had been remained major problems due to multiple reasons, which were required to be redressed to control the environmental pollution. He said that due to the ill town planning there were a lot of environment problems so the government departments and other stake holders should keep all environment aspects in view while devising the town and industrial estate planning.
The Commissioner informed that the Punjab government was considering concrete measures for shifting of industries out of the city. He said that it was joint responsibility of the society to keep the city clean for its beauty and good life.
He urged upon the launching of effective awareness campaign regarding protection of environment and appreciated the holding of the Seminar to apprise the participants of the monitoring of surface water bodies like rivers, canals, lakes and wetlands.
Speaking on the occasion MPA/member Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA), Major Abdul Rehman Rana said that result oriented strategy should be evolved for protective the environment on concrete footings. He expressed grave concerned over mixing of effluent water into irrigation water and said this dangerous trend should be discouraged and concerned departments including irrigation, Wasa, TMAs should take appropriate steps to address this menace.
Professor Dr Bakhsh Noon Department of Irrigation and Drainage Agri. University, Chaudhry Muhammad Shafique, Chairman Area Water Board and Deputy Director Lab Environment and Protection Department Punjab gave presentations about the water resources of Pakistan and measures for the monitoring of surface of water bodies. D O Environment Javed Iqbal highlighted the importance and objectives of holding the Seminar.
