The National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence has unanimously supported the ongoing military operation in Swat and Malakand agency, and stressed that the operation should be short termed and result-oriented. The committee also stressed the need for a national security policy, taking on board all the stakeholders to effectively counter the spate of extremism and terrorism in the country.
The committee met under the chairpersonship of MNA Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho in the Parliament House here on Thursday. The Secretary, Defence and Director (Mi1itary Operations) briefed the committee about the ongoing "Rahe-e-Rast" military operation in Swat and Malakand and the counter-terrorism measures.
He informed the committee that the anti-state activities of the militants paralysed the political and civil administration and challenged the military action against the miscreants.
However, before the initiation of military operation against the militants, the government had tried its utmost to resolve the issues through dialogue and accepted the popular demand of the people of the area by introducing Nizam-e-Adal regulations. The meeting was attended by National Assembly members Dr Talat Mahesar, Shagufta Sadiq, Amir Ali Khan Magsi, Sardar Talib Hassan Nakai, Syed Haider Ali Shah, Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, Shaikh Rohale Asghar, Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan and Jawad Hussain.-PR
