'Aari wheat varieties lead to increased production'

Agricultural research conducted at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (Aari) Faisalabad has got international recognition by the varieties of wheat evolved by its scientists in increasing agriculture production of the country. Director General Agricultural Research Dr Muhammad Rashid said this while addressing a seminar on 'Activities and Achievements of Wheat Research Institute' Faisalabad.
He said that young scientists are assets of the institute and they should be encouraged to conduct research. Makhdoom Hussain, Director, Wheat Research Institute Faisalabad informed the participants about the research activities and achievement of the institute. He said that share of wheat in GNP of the country is Rs 350 billion and if yield is increased up to 1 maund/acre it adds Rs 10 billion to the economy.
Highlighting the contribution of wheat, Research Institute Faisalabad said that wheat variety Sehar 06 developed by Aari scientists has given 83 maunds yield per acre in wheat yield competition. Prime Minister has also awarded certificate to research scientists of the institute.
He further stated that due to high yielding varieties developed by Aari scientists the country has harvested 25 million tons of wheat this year. He told that Pakistan clinched 6th position in wheat producing countries. The scientists presented research papers on different aspects of wheat production and regarding methods of increasing wheat production in the country.
