Prime Minister convenes meeting to decide local government system's fate

Prime Minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, has summoned a high level meeting on 23rd of June to decide the future of local government system. Sources said that the Ministers of Local Government of four provinces along with their Secretaries have been invited to participate in the meeting.
Federal Minister for Local Bodies and Rural Development, Abdul Razzaq Thaeem and the Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau, Dr Asim Hussain were also invited to participate in the meeting. The stakeholders of four provinces have been directed to bring their recommendations about the future of local government system. However, final decision will be made after taking all the stakeholders into confidence.
According to the sources, Sindh province wants to continue the present system after necessary amendments but other provinces particularly Punjab want the complete abolition of local government system from the country. The tenure of local government system will end in October 2009.
