Call to strengthen institutions

26 Jun, 2009

Senior Political Assistant to Chief Minister and senior PML-N leader Muhammad Pervez Malik called for the strengthening of institutions, instead of persons. The PML-N leader said that one man's decisions, during the rule of Pervez Musharraf, had inflicted a great loss to democracy and the country's economy.
While only functional and stable institutions could bring progress and prosperity to the country. Had the powers been with the elected parliament instead of the President House, the country would have become a land of peace, stability and prosperity, he added. He said that even those who had struggled for nine years against dictatorship were still deprived of democracy's benefits, and no change had been felt, except in the Presidency.
Malik said that Pervez Musharraf had left behind his agenda before quitting power and the continuation of his policies were causing the people trouble .The rulers were not ready to get rid of the remnants of dictatorship and co operate with public representatives.
He said that the parliament, even today, was not being taken into confidence, while taking any decision. Adding that rulers should stop considering Mian Nawaz Sharif a danger to their rule. He said that the PML-N leadership was struggling to promote democracy and national reconciliation and it was evident from the past that the PML-N never played foul to come into power. The people knew the politicians involved in conspiracies against democracy, and would reject them in the forthcoming general elections, he concluded.
