An aircraft provided by the federal government has started showering seeds on the hills of Fort Munro, the only developed hill station of South Punjab, for extensive afforestation. Commissioner DG Khan division, Hassan Iqbal, inaugurated the scheme to shower seeds on Fort Munro hills at a ceremony held on Monday.
Six maunds of seeds will be showered on Fort Munro Hills in two phases and 20,000 acre area will be covered in the first phase, the commissioner said. He said that almost 100,000 acre hilly area of DG Khan is included in the forest area and the seed showering scheme has been launched as a pilot project to fight pollution and give a sharp greener look to Fort Munro hills. Seeds will be showered on more hills provided the experiment gives encouraging result.
He said that small dams would be built to store the water of hill torrents. Conservator forests Syed Ajmal Rahim said that his department enjoys complete co-operation of Federal Seed Plant Protection and added all out effort will be made for the success of this initiative launched jointly by provincial and federal government.
