The power generation capability of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has drastically reduced due to technical fault at Mangla powerhouse. This situation has led to additional shortage of 1100 mw. As the prevailing heat wave has increased the use of electricity, it has increased the gap between supply and demand and power shortfall in the country has increased considerably.
Pesco is now carrying out load shedding in the province for 8 to 10 hours. Pesco Chief Executive Muhammad Qasim Khan has asked the public to conserve electricity and extend their maximum co-operation. Pesco has appealed to its customers to conserve energy in order to reduce the quantum of power deficits thereby reducing load shedding.
He has also urged the consumers to use power sparingly and ensure that not a single light bulb is being unnecessarily used. The company has also asked to conserve energy in commercial establishments where extra power is being used as means of marketing.
The domestic and commercial consumers have also been asked to use energy savers and tube lights instead of bulbs, and avoid use of heavy electricity appliances specially air-conditioners, etc, during peak hours--from 5 pm to 11 pm. Pesco had appealed for co-operation to conserve electricity "in the larger national interest" so that the system may not get overloaded, and continued and uninterrupted power supply can be maintained.
