05 Sep, 2009

President Asif Ali Zardari has not extended the term of present local governments institutions till December 31, said President's Spokesman Farhatullah Babar. Talking to media here on Friday Babar rejected the reports that the president had extended the tenure of present local governments institution. He said there is no truth in these reports.
It is pertinent to mentioned here that Attorney General of Pakistan Sardar Latif Khan Khosa told media men the same day that President Asif Ali Zardari had extended the term of local governments institutions till December 31. However, later on he denied the statement saying media carried his statement out of context. Farhatullah Baber said that the future of local governments' institutions would be decided with consensus among all the provinces.
"No one is above the law and Constitution, accordingly, former President General Pervez Musharraf (Retd) should be made accountable", he added. Baber said that the AGP stated nothing about the extension of incumbent nazims' terms ending next month. He said AG's assertion was misunderstood and taken out of context. He said that the provinces were not empowered to decide the fate of the local bodies, maintaining that the system would be continued till the final decision.
