Balochistan provincial assembly working without legislative committees

15 Sep, 2009

Balochistan Assembly is the only provincial assembly out of total four provincial assemblies of the country which is working without the legislative committees particularly Public Accounts Committee (PAC). APP learnt on Monday that other three provincial assemblies including Punjab, Sindh and NWFP assemblies have formed their legislative committees but Balochistan Assembly is yet to take step in this connection.
The PAC of Sindh Assembly is the only functional PAC and has taken action against bungling of different departments of government of Sindh. The PAC Sindh Assembly headed by Jam Tamachi Unar has earned respect after its actions against corruption of different department were published and telecast in media, but it has been now more than fifteen months that the Balochistan Assembly is working without the committees. Four Standing Committees in the Balochistan Assembly, namely on Food and Agriculture, General Administration, Industries, Labour, Education, Health, and Local Government, and Revenue, Finance and Development.
They have to also look into the matters of other government departments of province. There is dire need of functioning of other committees, including the all important PAC, along with the Finance Committee, Functional Committee and House and Library Committee to look into the government matters. Critics have raised objection that without Standing Committees, the assembly cannot function. Such committees help the lawmakers in legislation process.
