President grants special remissions in jail terms

President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday approved special remissions in jail terms on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Special remissions, approved by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister and under article 45 of the Constitution, include total remission for those prisoners who are 70 years of age or above and have undergone 1/3rd sentence.
Female prisoners above 60 and male prisoners above 65 years of age have been given full remission provided they have undergone at least 1/3rd of their substantive sentence and not involved in terrorist acts and culpable homicide. Juvenile convicts (under 18 years of age) who have served 1/3rd of their substantive sentence except those involved in terrorist acts, heinous crimes and cases under Hudood Ordinance have also been given total remission of their remaining sentence.
Special remission of one year has been approved for female prisoners accompanied by children and serving sentence of imprisonment for crimes other than culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. A remission of 90 days to prisoners convicted for life imprisonment and 45 days to all other convicts has also been allowed.
