'Gilgit-Baltistan Package a valuable gift from government'

Leader of the House in the Senate, Senator Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari here, on Thursday, termed the Gilgit-Baltistan Package a valuable gift from Pakistan Peoples Party's government to the people of Gilgit Baltistan. Leader of the House Senator Bokhari said that Quaid-e-Awam Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1975 took steps to abolish Frontier Crimes Regulation from the constitution.
He said that the Quaid-e-Awam also took measures to eliminate the heredity rule of Rajas and Maharajas and their forced taxation upon the tenants. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto banned taxation of the landlords upon their serfs that was in the form of animals, eggs and chicken.
Nayyar Bukhari said that similarly Benazir Bhutto in 1993 upgraded the Northern Areas Council as a legislative assembly and restored status of the districts that enhanced the regional significance and importance. PPP with the people's rights enshrined in its manifesto is bound to provide people with their fundamental rights, he added.
Bukhari said that the PPP was following footsteps of its martyred leader. The PPP-led government has given this region the provincial status and fulfilled the promise of solving people's problems at their door step. He said that success in war against terrorism was another achievement of the present government, which has strengthened Pakistan.
