PPP co-chairman office: petition filed seeking directions against Zardari

03 Oct, 2009

A local lawyer has filed a constitutional petition before the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking directions against President Asif Ali Zardari to surrender the office of PPP co-chairman. The petitioner lawyer Asif Mehmood also sought directions for the President Zardari to display only portraits of father of the nation Quaid-e-Azam in President House instead of former chairperson PPP Benazir Bhutto.
He said the President was bound under his oath only to display the portrait of Quaid-e-Azam and it was also not allowed by the Constitution. Against holding the office of co-chairman PPP, the petitioner pleaded that said act of President Zardari was violation of article 41 (1) of the constitution. He said that the President Zardari being head of the state cannot hold an office of a political party.
