Two policemen and two criminals were among six people killed in a major police operation against Lyari gangsters here on Sunday. The encounter took place when police raided a godown of gangsters at Kalakot. Police recovered arms and arrested three accused.
Armed gangsters opened fire on police, which was retaliated. The crossfire was continuing till filing this report. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers were present in area. All markets in the areas were closed and people remained confined to their homes.
Police sources said it might take several more hours to successfully windup the operation. Meanwhile, DIGP South, Ghulam Nabi Memon said the police has got access to important hideouts of criminal elements in Lyari area and now the force is freely patrolling in these areas.
Addressing a press conference here at his office here on Sunday, he said that the police force is making all out efforts against criminals elements in Lyari. Now only those officials of the Police are working in Lyari, who have shown willingness to perform duties there, he added.
Speaking about recent police raid, he said a raid was conducted on pointing out by an apprehended accused in Lyari. He said the police has recovered one LMG, seven Kalashnikov, two Repeaters, one Mauser rifle, a TT pistol, eight walkie-talkies and heavy amount of bullets while two accused are arrested during the raid.
He lauded the efforts of TPO Khadim Rind, SHO Chakiwara, Asif Munawer and DSP Sarwar Commando for the successful action against criminals in Lyari. He also called for active and clean policing in the Lyari for elimination of criminals and said if consistent policing is done the criminals activities will be controlled. To a question about alleged killing of police personnel during the police action in Lyari, the DIGP South said these were target killing as a sepoy Asif was killed, while he was going to his duty while two officials received injuries when a police van was attacked.
