Sardar Yaqoob resigns as AJK Prime Minister

15 Oct, 2009

Prime Minister of AJK, Sardar Yaqoob Khan announced that he had resigned as Prime Minister just to avoid a political controversy in the Legislative Assembly. Dispelling impression of pressure of no-confidence motion or other, Sardar Yaqoob said, "I have tendered resignation as the Prime Minister without any pressure."
I took this decision to discourage horse-trading in the Assembly and set democratic tradition aimed at promoting democracy in the AJK, Sardar Yaqoob said this on Wednesday night while addressing an emergent press conference at Kashmir House.
Responding to a question, he said, "I did not use my right to dissolve the Assembly as I always respect democracy and democratic traditions." To a question about the summoning of Session of the AJK Assembly on Thursday, he said, "Session of the AJK Assembly could not be held as he had tendered resignation now."
When asked about the status of the cabinet, Sardar Yaqoob made it clear that the cabinet had also been dissolved automatically after his resignation according to the Constitution of the AJK. Responding to a question about his decision to contest election of the Leader of the House again, he said it would be decided with the consultation of party leadership and colleagues. However, he said, "I will welcome to anyone who so will be elected Leader of the House if he was not elected Leader of the House again." It may be recalled here that the Muslim Conference Party moved a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister a day earlier.
