NRO a stigma for democracy: Elahi

17 Oct, 2009

Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Punjab Chief, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi on Friday declared the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) a stigma for democracy and vowed that his party will not allow the government to pass the NRO.
Talking to mediamen outside the parliament house, Pervez Elahi said his party will never compromise on national issues and corruption, adding that PML-Q was never in favour of issuance of NRO. He said he would like to put it on record that his party had opposed the NRO through a resolution when the previous government was planning to issue this ordinance, and therefore, PML-Q blocked the NRO to become a law.
He demanded of the government to disclose the names of beneficiaries as it has decided to table NRO before the parliament, so that the nation could know about the people and parties who were benefited from the Ordinance.
He declared that not a single member of his family or party was involved in any sort of corruption, adding that if any member of his party or family is involved in corruption had taken benefit of NRO, the government should disclose their names along with others and bring charges against them. He added that actually the Ordinance was a result of secret deal between Benazir Bhutto and Pervez Musharraf. "We had earlier opposed the NRO and will continue to do so in the parliament as per the party policy," Elahi said.
