Four US nationals detained, released

22 Oct, 2009

Islamabad Police detained four American nationals in Red Zone for carrying unlicensed arms. They were later released on the intervention of the US Embassy. Police officials at Secretariat Chowk stopped a car at security checkpoint and recovered two unlicensed pistols from the US nationals travelling in that car, police sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday.
The detained foreigners failed to submit any identification paper or any document regarding the firearms. They were, however, released after the intervention of the US Embassy. The Foreign Office spokesman could not be reached for his comments.
On October 6, two diplomats of a European country were detained in the same Red Zone while they were carrying hand grenades, bullet-proof jackets and guns. They were also released on the intervention of a US Embassy official. Another foreigner was detained by law enforcement agencies at Margalla Road in E-sector. He was found taking photographs of the Air Headquarters. Sources said that the nationality of the foreigner could not be ascertained. He was taken to some undisclosed place for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the First Information Report (FIR) of the twin suicide bomb blasts in International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) against unidentified people was registered at I-9 Police Station. The law enforcement agencies in a countrywide crackdown arrested more than 150 foreigners, including 70 Afghans.
