Sniffer dogs being deployed to prevent terrorist attacks

23 Oct, 2009

Use of sniffer dogs will assist in forestalling terrorist attacks as they are trained to detect explosives. Telenor Pakistan has hired the services of a private company, K-9 Services Limited, to check the parking area around their office to forestall any untoward incident.
Four sniffer dogs are deployed outside Telenor offices in Blue Area to check each and every vehicle. These dogs are highly trained to smell explosives, drugs and other material used by terrorists, said the caretaker of the sniffer dog outside Telenor office in Blue Area, opposite Polyclinic, while talking to Business Recorder on Thursday.
These dogs are brought on duty in the morning and will remain there till 8 pm. He said that a total of eight sniffer dogs were in Islamabad and would given on demand to police, anti-terrorist squads and other institutions. These dogs were being used on checkpoints to trace if any explosive was hidden in vehicles, he added.
"We are currently providing service for route clearing for the Prime Minister, checking entry points at the Prime Minister House, Parliament House, diplomatic enclave and all major check points in Islamabad. We are not charging the police as we believe it is our responsibility to protect Islamabad, our capital," said owner of K-9 Services Limited Colonel Faiz Mukhtar (Retd).
He said this was an effective way to deal with terrorists, dacoits, thieves and other criminals, who were carrying explosives or drugs. "It is simply not possible to dodge these dogs," he added. He said that he had set up a modern dog training centre in Angori area of Murree Hills where more than 60 dogs were undergoing training by highly skilled trainers.
He said that many multi-national companies had expressed their confidence in this system and companies like ICI, Hub Power Company, Shell, Pakistan Tobacco Company, Pakistan Refineries Limited, Telenor Pakistan, Automobile Corporation of Pakistan and many others have hired the services of K-9 Services Limited. He said that Dutch Embassy had also hired the services of the company.
