UN inspectors to leave for Tehran on Saturday

24 Oct, 2009

Inspectors from the UN nuclear watchdog will depart for Tehran on Saturday to inspect Iran's second uranium enrichment plant near the holy city of Qom, the official IRNA news agency said. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) staff "will stay for two or three days" in Iran, IRNA said on Friday.
On September 21 Iran revealed to the IAEA it is building a second uranium enrichment plant, triggering widespread global anxiety as enriching uranium is the most controversial aspect of Tehran's nuclear programme. The Qom plant is being built inside a mountain near a military base and the inspection, to take place on Sunday, was fixed during a recent visit to Tehran by IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei.
