Lahore Electric Supply Company workers should continue to improve their professional skills and knowledge to provide better services to consumers. Line staff's pay scales along with cases of promotion would be finalised next month. Line staff should work with safety equipment to avert accidents.
These views were expressed by Muhammad Azhar Iqbal, Chief Executive Lahore Electricity Supply Company (Lesco) in a meeting at Bakhtiar Labour Hall on Sunday held under the aegis of the Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union. Representatives of the management and a large number of workers attended the meeting.
Earlier, Khurshid Ahmed, general secretary of the union welcomed the guests and said electricity workers performed their duties in hazardous conditions, sacrificing more than 1000 lives every year and far more becoming permanently disabled. He demanded that their wages should be fixed according to the risk involved and high costs of living. He said electricity was an engine of national economic and social progress, therefore, hydel and coal resources should also be used for the provision of cheaper and sufficient electricity to meet national requirements and overcome power shortages.
He also urged the management and workers to create a team spirit for national economic and social progress and raise productivity for the welfare of the workers.
The meeting was also addressed by Abdul Latif Nizamani, President, Haji Muhammad Ramazan Achakzai, Joint President, and Gohar Taj, Secretary NWFP, of the union and outgoing Chief Executive Lesco, Muhammad Akram Arain, and Abdul Rehman, General Manager HRM Pepco. Speakers lauded the contribution of outgoing Chief Executive Muhammad Akram Arain and Abdul Rehman, General Manager HRM for their contribution to the welfare of workers.
