While playing a more important and cardinal role in the present era, women are to build a healthy society and equip themselves with knowledge, as social issues can only be solved with the progress achieved in the political and educational fields.
This was stated by City Naib Nazim, Nasrin Jalil while speaking at a workshop at a local hotel.
The Naib Nazim said that women are being exploited even today in the name of traditions and religion. Whenever excesses are committed in the society, the women get directly affected.
She emphasised that the media organisations will have to especially focus on the issues of women because of its direct impact on human rights. She said that if incidents of violence against media are not reported by the media the culprits involved go unpunished. Therefore, there is a need for women to adopt journalism as a profession which will provide them an opportunity to ponder and program planning which will not only help create awareness among womenfolk about their rights but also carry their objectives forward. Nasrin Jalil observed that if women themselves would be the editor, reporter and researcher, it would help bring greater news coverage about violence against women.
She pointed that we are living in a society which is devoid of justice and which is declining under the weight of feudal thinking and approach, with women being the target. "We have to change the feudal thinking and counter it at every cost for its being the issue of very existence of the society and women". Naib Nazim said that feudal system continues to exist, but MQM did raise its voice against this oppressive system and its struggle for its elimination is continued. MQM is the only party, which not only believes in the rights of women but also is struggling to get these rights to them, she stated.
She said MQM not only invited women to think about taking part in politics, but also made them partner in politics and the way they participate in the MQM meetings, that is non-visible in any other political or religious party. Karachi is a city where the women not only have the feeling of protection but also enjoy a respectful place in the society, she concluded.
