Former President of Bar Association, Aitzaz Ahsan on Thursday called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and discussed important political issues along with legal complications regarding constitutional package.
The meeting is part of the series of the President's fresh interactions with politicians and his aides, which he started after new political scenario emerged in Pakistan due to stance of some of PPP's key coalition partners on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
The President and the Prime Minister reportedly consulted Aitzaz on the legal complications pertaining to the NRO, which the government is mindful of referring to the court after failing to get support of the coalition partners in the Parliament. Aitzaz Ahsan, is one of the key PPP leaders whose basic membership has already been suspended by party due to his independent view on issues relating to judiciary.
It is learnt that he advised the President and the Prime Minister to run the state affairs as per the law and restore 1973 Constitution to improve the party's image. Sources said Aitzaz also gave legal views on the NRO and suggested the President to face the legal battle in courts.
Talking to a TV channel, Aitzaz said he discussed important national issues with the President and the Prime Minister. He was of the view that the country is passing through a critical juncture and it was realised by the President and the Prime Minister. "I gave them fruitful suggestions to bring the country out of this difficult situation," he added. He said he has no personal agenda with the President and the Prime Minister and issues of national importance were discussed.
