Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister, Sharmila Farooqui, has said that there are many flaws in the Sindh Tenancy Act 1950 and bonded labour abolition Act 1992, as they do not meet the present requirement.
She observed this while delivering her presidential address at a one-day seminar on the "Problems of bonded labour and solution" organised by Society for the Protection of the Rights of Children (SPARC) at the Sindhi Language Authority Hyderabad, on Saturday.
She said that PPP is the only representative party of the poor and workers classes of the society and it is committed to protecting the basic rights of them at any cost. She said that PPP government has invited proposals from the stakeholders before making amendments in Sindh Tenancy Act 1950 and bonded labour abolition Act 1992.
Regarding punishment for offence of bonded labour, mentioned in the above laws, she said that it should be increased from imprisonment for two years to five years, while fine from Rs 50 thousands to Rs 0.5 million with the provision of non-bailable warrant against the offenders.
Criticising the performance of Zila Nazims, she said, who being head of the vigilance committees, they have done nothing against bonded labour. She said that Sindh government is determined to establish the vigilance net against bonded labour up to the UC level.
