25 Nov, 2009

A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Wednesday (today) would proceed with two identical petitions against President Asif Ali Zardari for holding political office of co-chairman PPP. The bench during the last date of hearing had directed the Attorney General of Pakistan to assist the court on the matter.
The petitions were filed by Pakistan Lawyers Forum (PLF) through A K Dogar and Asif Mehmood advocate. Petitioners submitted that President Zardari in violation of article 41 (1) of the constitution was holding office of co-chairperson of PPP.
The petitioners further said the SC has laid down that the President is non-partisan person so in order to protect and preserve the dignity of the office Zardari is required to maintain a neutral image.
The petitioners therefore, prayed to the court to direct the government to act in accordance with law asking the President to surrender the office of the co-Chairmanship of the party, as declared by the Supreme Court of Pakistan because the case law was also the law of the land.
