Rehman terms 'Balochistan package' a consensus document

25 Nov, 2009

Federal Minister for Interior, Rehman Malik, has termed the Balochistan package as a consensus document, saying that this will help change the overall political and socio-economic conditions of the province.
"The Special Parliamentary Committee on Balochistan took political leadership of country into confidence, before giving final nod to table the package in the joint sitting of the Parliament", Malik said while talking to reporters outside the Parliament House, after joint sitting on Tuesday afternoon with Speaker National Assembly, Dr Fehmida Mirza in the chair.
He was of the view that the package will help restore the peace in the province and help the people who are hiding in mountains to join the mainstream activities. Malik told reporters that the figure of missing persons has crossed one thousand while more details are surfacing with each passing day. "We are looking into the matter as most of the missing men were facing political victimisation", he added.
Responding to a question, Rehman Malik categorically denied any military operation in Balochistan, saying that there is no military operation in the province but Frontier Constabulary (FC) is deployed at different places to block the mischievous activities of some misguided elements.
Balochistan government has requested the Federal Government and Interior Ministry for deployment of FC is Sui, Turbat and many other areas to end the target killings in these areas, Malik maintained, adding that after deployment of the FC, target killing came to a halt. People of Balochistan have felt that small group of people are destroying peace in the province for their petty interests, Malik said, adding that government will address concerns of everyone in Balochistan package.
To another question regarding the alleged indulgence of Brahamdag Bugti, grandson of slain Baloch chieftain Akbar Bugti in anti-Pakistan activities, the Interior Minister said that these are allegations and without scrutinising and investigating these no final word will be given. "We will take all stakeholders of Balochistan into confidence and use all out efforts to bring them in mainstream politics for the sake of socio-economic development of the province", he opined.
