01 Dec, 2009

City District Government Karachi (CDGK) and town administrations have successfully lifted/disposed 99 percent offal of sacrificial animals across the city during Eid-ul-Azha, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal told Business Recorder on Monday.
He said the operation of lifting of offal of sacrificial animals, has successfully been completed by 3:00 pm on Monday and a million plus offal has been buried into different trenches. He further said that soon after completing the removal of offals, the process of fumigation has started in 18 towns of the city. The Health Department of City Government was already conducting regular fumigation through vehicles of Machine Pool Depot Municipal Services Department with 800 officials.
Over 3750 vehicles and machinery were being used for dumping and burial of offal and at least 11 thousand officials of city and town administration had performed their duties in this operation, he added. "It was not an easy task to lift millions of offal in three days on a timely basis and disposed them off scientifically while maintaining the cleanliness in the city", he said adding that City Government, with close co-ordination with the 18 town administrations, has made this difficult task possible.
According to sources in CDGK, during the successful operation of lifting of offal of sacrificial animals, CDGK has disposed at least 587351 and 415399 offal on the first and second day of Eid respectively, clearing all the 18 towns of the city.
Almost 0.1 million of offal has also been buried on the third day of the religious festival making the total numbers of offal lifted, over 1.1 million. These offals have immediately been buried into almost 42 trenches, which had been dug in different areas of the city like Mewa Shah, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Malir, Landhi, Gadap, Bin Qasim and Korangi Town with a capacity of more than 1.5 million offals.
Nazim Karachi said that City District Government Karachi introduced a new method of burial of offal in Karachi and the citizens had themselves witnessed the performance of city and town administration for last four years. He said that City Government had made even better arrangements this year and he, himself, with DCO Karachi, all town nazmeen, union nazmeen and staff of more than 10 thousand officials had remained on the roads to monitor and perform the operation.
He further said that the Central Control Room at city government could be contacted on 1339 for any complaints, which would be addressed immediately through a task force established in 174 union councils and 18 towns of the city. He also hailed the performance of 1500 City Wardens who were given special assignment on shift basis to support the whole arrangements during Eid-ul-Azha.
However, people in some areas of the city, complained that though the offals were removed from the area but the government was yet to wash the roads. Though the city Nazim had issued directives to the Fire Brigade Department to wash the affected roads and streets where joint sacrifice is made, the department had not performed its duty.
