21 killed in bus collision in Bangladesh

07 Dec, 2009

Two passenger buses collided head-on in south-western Bangladesh on Sunday, leaving 21 people dead and 50 injured. The accident occurred in Faridpur district, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south-west of the capital, Dhaka, local government administrator Helal Uddin said.
Uddin had earlier said at least 15 people died at the scene and 30 others were injured, but the United News of Bangladesh agency later put the casualty figure at 21.
The agency said at least 50 people were hurt. Officials could not be reached immediately to confirm the new figure. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority says vehicle accidents, mainly blamed on poor roads and erratic driving, kill about 4,000 people each year.
