'KESC saved 140 megawatts daily through daylight saving drive'

13 Dec, 2009

The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) saved 140 to 145 megawatts of electricity daily during the daylight saving campaign this summer. This was stated by Asif Hussain Siddiqui, Director Energy Conservation Department (ECD) of KESC, at a media briefing here on Saturday. He was accompanied by Shakil Ahmed Khan, General Manager ECD.
Siddiqui said that the proposal to close marriage halls and lawns at 12:00 midnight was presented by KESC in April this year. The City Government, various social organisations, the Shadi Halls Association and other stakeholders supported the plan, consequently the Sindh Government issued instructions for implementation of the plan.
Due to the plan, 40MW electricity is being conserved amounting to Rs 230.4 million, which would also reduce carbon emissions by 3998.592 metric tons. On this occasion, he announced the KESC Energy Conservation Vision to save 200 MW by 2011.
As per details, 10 percent of the target (20MW), is to be conserved by saving lights at KESC Offices & Installations; 60 percent (120MW), by industrial sector, 10 percent (20MW), by commercial sector; and 20 per cent (40MW) is to be conserved by the domestic and small commercial sector. He said that interactive sessions were in progress with industrialists' associations, trade bodies, and individual consumers like domestic users, small traders, shopping centres and big restaurants etc, to achieve the target of the conservation plan.
He explained that the installation of a 200 MW plant required an approximate investment of $200 million. He informed media that a full-fledged Energy Conservation Department has been established in KESC to cope with the Demand Side Management, Global Warming, CDM related issues in collaboration with CDGK as strategic partners, ABB as technical partner, PHILLIPS as technical partners, and COPULA (KFC) as Energy Efficiency Campaign partner. As a result of the energy surveys of various consumers by KESC Energy Conservation Teams so far, approximately 90 MW of electricity are expected to be saved.
The KESC and ABB Audit Team also conducted a survey of KWSB, which revealed that the total contract load of KWSB is 70MW: running load is 43 MW, standby mode is 27 MW. The survey further revealed that out of 18 MW load of pumping stations (Excluding Pipri) 3 MW load can be saved, which is 17 per cent of the total consumption. Once implemented, this would annually save Rs 175 million, he said.
According to another survey conducted by KESC, he said, the total load of streetlights in Karachi is approximately 24 MW. As a pilot project, corridors I, II and III, and the Malir River Bridge (1MW load) have been taken for load optimisation. At the same time, in order to uplift the face of the Metropolitan, revamping of streetlights of Shahrah-e-Faisal was taken for providing uninterrupted power supply. The project would be completed tentatively in the first week of January 2010 in collaboration with the EDO Works, CDGK, Siddiqui added.
