Vietnam edged ahead at the top of the Southeast Asian Games medals table Saturday as Thailand took gold in the women's team tennis amid an inquest into their shock football defeat. Tamarine Tanasugarn beat Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-2, 6-0 and Nudnida Luangnam defeated Lavinia Tananta 7-5, 6-1 to seal a 2-0 victory for Thailand, who topped the medals charts at the 2007 SEA Games.
With the men's team tennis yet to be decided and seven golds to be handed out in the pool Saturday evening, Vietnam were on 18 golds overall, one ahead of Thailand and four clear of Singapore. Meanwhile, Thai football chiefs said they would decide on the future of coach Steve Darby, whose under-23 side crashed out in the group stages Friday after conceding two late goals to Malaysia. It ends a spectacular run for the Thais, who have won the SEA Games football gold in every edition since 1993. They needed only a draw to qualify for the last four.
