War on terror and Pakistan

17 Dec, 2009

Terrorism is a major problem of Pakistan since the 1980s, which began primarily with the Soviet-Afghan War. The war brought numerous fighters from all over the world to South Asia in the name of jihad. The US also trained many extremists in this war against the Soviet Union in the name of jihad.
This suggests that various terrorists' organisations were created as a result of CIA support, which not the product of religion. In the wake of the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, President George W. Bush launched major military operations as part of a global US-led antiterrorism effort.
In this war, US objectives were to protect the citizens of the US and allies, and disrupt the activities of the international terrorist organisations made up of a number of groups, under the umbrella of al Qaeda. Pakistan is an ally of US after September 11, playing the role of frontline state in the war against terrorism.
From day one, Pakistan has adopted a policy of peace, sovereignty, security, national interests and international co-operation. The discussion is not whether the decision was correct or not, but after joining it, Pakistan is still facing a very critical situation.
Pakistan wants that terrorism should be eliminated with international co-operation, and countries should adopt a joint strategy to root out this common threat to all countries. All countries should join hands for the sake of peace in the world for a unanimous effort for the eradication of terrorism. But unfortunately, Pakistan making all such efforts against terrorism and facing an insurgency from different terrorist's groups.
Due to this, there is severe internal instability as there is no one safe from such types of terrorist's activities in Pakistan. Every citizen is frightened and a victim because terrorists are targeting different civilians, Army personnel, different security and government institutions and educational institutions. As a result, Pakistan is facing a 9/11-like situation every day.
So the question is why Pakistan is still being criticised at the international level? Why is it not appreciated Pakistan for its efforts against terrorism? Why blame Pakistan for any terrorist activity in any other country? Even though proofs discovered by the Pakistan army in Swat and Waziristan that reveal the involvement of a foreign hand in the form of sophisticated weapons used by the terrorists.
Pakistan's government has said again and again to the world community that they should support Pakistan in this war and if they won't Pakistan will have to decrease her development budget. So Pakistan is doing this now. The American administration passed the Kerry-Lugar bill recently, as a kind of assistance for Pakistan, according to which America will give Pakistan 1.5 billion dollars per year with many conditions.
However the cost is much more of what Pakistan is paying for fighting terrorism. The citizens are paying the price in the form of their blood. Therefore, America must pay for the loss, which Pakistan is still facing. Pakistan should learn a lesson from past experiences and leave all issues behind and all parties should join hands together for the sovereignty of Pakistan.
