A federal spokesman says at least 55 people died and 38 others were injured when a truck carrying bags of fertiliser slammed into a group of people near a market in central Nigeria. Samuel Obayemi of the Nigerian Federal Road Commission says the truck driver lost control of his rig and crashed into three other vehicles and a crowd of people.
Obayemi says the crash occurred at 6 pm Friday during a busy time at the local market in Dekina, a community located in Nigeria's Kogi state. Fatal traffic crashes are common in Nigeria, where decades-old roads are normally pitted with potholes and drivers frequently fail to observe traffic laws.
