27 Dec, 2009

A member Lahore High Court Bar Association Mohammad Azhar Siddique has approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan at Lahore registry, seeking directions for holding by-election in constituency NA-123, Lahore. Petitioner challenged the decision of a Lahore High Court division bench dismissing three appeals against delay of by-elections after upholding decision of a single bench.
The single bench on a petition of Punjab government had stayed the holding of by-polls in the province on account of bad law and situation and a point of "condemned unheard' raised by the government. He said the government took the plea that the law and order situation was not suitable for conducting election, which was a lame excuse. He stated that even after death of Benazir Bhutto the elections were held and in recent past elections were conducted in Gilgit and Baltistan also. He requested to issued directions to the election commission to hold the election.
