The Executive Committee of Pakistan Bar Council in its meeting held here on Thursday passed a resolution, saying it has the jurisdiction to deal with cases of lawyers' misconduct as an appropriate forum. The meeting was presided over by Chaudhry Muhammad Nasrullah Warraich. Two resolutions were passed in the meeting. Upon the issue of lawyers' misconduct, the Committee said.
"It has viewed with concern intervention of courts, NAB etc; into professional matters relating to lawyers' conduct. It said that in all matters relating to lawyers, like enrolment, discipline, professional conduct, it were the Bar Councils alone which has the jurisdiction to entertain and deal with such matters. "There appears to be no justification for any proceedings against lawyers before any other forum/body," the resolution added.
The Committee also viewed such intrusion on the independence of Bar as unfavourably and unacceptable. In the second resolution, the Committee condemned suicide attack on peaceful Ashura procession in Karachi and expressed sympathy with the bereaved families. It also called upon the federal and provincial government to hold thorough and impartial investigation of the tragic incident and bring the culprits to book.
