06 Jan, 2010

The Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reform on Tuesday agreed to extend the tenure of Chief Election Commissioner from three years to five years. The committee met here with Senator Raza Rabbani in the chair and discussed all the clauses up to Article 226 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
The committee also recommended appointment of Chief Election Commissioner through the Parliament. The parliamentary committee also deliberated on the issue of provincial autonomy, which is major source of concern for the smaller provinces.
The committee will continue its sitting till January 11 to discuss the remaining articles of the Constitution to give the recommendations final shape as soon as possible, as PML-N is pressing to remove 17th Amendment and article 58(2)B of the Constitution for implementation of Charter of Democracy in letter and spirit.
