The Patent Office of the Government of Pakistan has recently notified the patent registration of PRKAG3 Alleles and use of the same as genetic marker for species differentiation. According to the spokes person of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) discovery has been registered through untiring efforts of Professor Dr Masroor Ellahi Babar and his team under the able leadership of vice-chancellor of UVAS Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz.
The immediate benefits of this discovery would include to genetically differentiate between cattle and buffalo with hard and authenticated evidence. Similarly the newly discovered PRKAG3 will be used as a reference to find out the presence or absence of genetic markers in different animals for the selection of genetically superior and efficient converters of feed in cattle and buffalo. In addition to this work, patent registration of Nili buffalo, a number of microbial species of Pakistan is being processed, which will definitely rank UVAS amongst the most advanced research institution in the country.
