Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has made it clear that it would support the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the local bodies bill only if it passes a resolution in favour of President Asif Ali Zardari in the Punjab Assembly.
Well placed party sources told Business Recorder that the PPP is set to give tough time to the PML-N on the local bodies bill in the provincial assembly session starting from Wednesday (today). According to the sources, the issue has been deferred until the return of PML-N top leadership from abroad.
The provincial parliamentary party of the PML-N held a detailed meeting on Tuesday evening. However, no meeting of the PPP provincial parliamentary party was held ahead of the provincial assembly session. When asked about the reaction of President Asif Ali Zardari on the issue, the sources said he is silent on the issue and no specific instructions have been passed by him to the provincial party leadership.
It may be noted that President Asif Ali Zardari had called a meeting of the provincial party executive committee at the Governor House. The party sources said the President is very much keen on re-organisation of the party in the province of Punjab and he has, for the first time, set up a women-dominated party membership committee in the province with a mandate of motivating the workers ahead of the local bodies elections. Sources said the party would organise party's internal elections on the completion of the membership drive by coming March.
