Be prepared!

The historic earthquake struck Haiti a week back on January 12 with a magnitude of 7.0. More than a 100 thousand lost their loved ones, properties and their hope of living, and started cursing their fate. Many are still trapped under the rubble, where International Organisations are working to secure lives. The whole infrastructure collapsed.
The medical and food aid provided by the United Nations was insufficient. At this crucial stage, when the whole world is facing with different natural disasters, we, the citizens of Pakistan want to show our concern for the sufferers. At the same time, it is our duty to prepare ourselves for such unavoidable circumstances, because earthquakes can happen in most countries, anytime, without warning.
Reducing hazards and knowing what to do before, during and after can make a big difference in your life. As a trainee of earthquake rehabilitation, I would like to give the following suggestions to the readers of this reputed newspaper:
Before earthquake: Prepare an emergency supplies kit for your family including a few mineral water bottles and non-perishable food, first-aid kit with essential medication, flashlight and battery-operated radio with extra batteries; get training in how to use a fire extinguisher and first aid; make a diary and keep the important phone numbers of your family members in it and always keep it with you; bolt all heavy objects and install strong handle on cupboards; try to use light objects in at least one room; develop an earthquake safety action plan for your family, identifying places that can provide the highest amount of protection during an earthquake; teach family members how to cut off water, gas and electricity within the house. When the shaking begins: Be relaxed! Switch off your electricity and gas lines at once; if you are indoors, drop under a heavy chair, bed, furniture, table etc.
Stay away from glass windows and protect your body using your arm; Stay away from doorways, violent motion could cause the doors to slam against your body, crush your fingers or inflict other serious injuries; Do not run outside, as it may have seen that most deaths occur during earthquake jolts, from running outside without considering the negative result; If you're outdoor, move to a clear area away from trees, signs, buildings, electrical wires, and poles and do not stop on or under bridges too; Protect your head with your arms while sitting on the ground or under any heavy furniture.
Be alert for aftershocks. Each time you feel one; just drop yourself under any heavy furniture; Pay attention to damaged utilities. Avoid loose or dangling electric power lines and report all gas and electrical problems to the proper authorities and turn off any damaged utilities; Use flashlights instead of candles or lanterns and inspect your home for damage. Get everyone out if your home is unsafe. May Allah bless us all and always keep us in His shelter.
