Karachi University tests for admission to PhD, M Phil: question papers allegedly leaked out

24 Jan, 2010

The question papers for admission in M Phil programme, University of Karachi have been leaked prior to the written test. The students were found discussing question papers on their cell-phones, hotels and photocopy shops on late Saturday night. This is the second time within month that the question papers of the university have been leaked out before test.
Thousands of students willing to appear in the M Phil programme in various departments of the University of Karachi may not be able to obtain admission in the varsity due to disclosure of question papers prior to the entry test. The administration of Karachi University, which has arranged an entry test for the M Phil's candidates on Sunday (today), has failed to maintain secrecy of question papers before the test.
Some influential people once again have succeeded to steal question papers during night between Saturday and Sunday to strengthen their position in the written test, it is reliably learnt. After the failure of National Testing System (NTS), the varsity administration has evolved standard procedures for conducting written tests and interviews of those candidates seeking admission in M Phil programme.
According to new testing system, the varsity has asked the chairmen/chairpersons of all departments to form Departmental Research Committee (DRC) and invite all M Phil and PhD degree holders for preparation of question papers. The university had constituted a committee under the supervision of Dean Faculty of Science Shahana Urooj Kazmi and the committee decided to seek help of the ex-degree holders for preparation of test.
The committee divided the questionnaire into segments and invited all M Phil and PhD degree holder teachers to design different sections under the supervision of concerned chairman/chairpersons due to which it has failed to maintain the secrecy. As the university management allows huge number of stakeholders during preparation of the written test, it could not maintain secrecy of examination. Some teachers have disclosed the secrets before students due to which some portion of the 100 marks test leaked through the examination centre.
Talking to Business Recorder, Head of Testing Committee Shahana Urooj Kazmi rejected reports of the disclosure of question papers, but accepted that professors of all departments have given guidelines to the willing candidates. "The question papers for admission in all departments are prepared under the supervision of chairmen/chairpersons of the concerned departments," she added.
She said the committee had called meeting of chairmen/chairpersons on Saturday and directed them to maintain secrecy before the test timings. "The question papers have been divided into two parts, English and Communication Skills and Fundamentals of Specific Subjects," she added.
