PPP-backed lawyers cause rumpus in Bar meeting

27 Jan, 2010

PPP-backed lawyers on Tuesday created rumpus in the Lahore High Court Bar Association meeting and foiled an attempt to pass a resolution against National Reconciliation Ordinance and President Asif Ali Zardari.
A meeting of the LHCBA general house was fixed to consider requisitions presented by Imrana Baloch against heavy expenditure being made by the Bar candidates for the forthcoming election and Nasim Ahmad Bajwa's proposals to express support for the SC judgement against NRO and directing the executive to initiate proceedings against all NRO beneficiaries.
When mover of the resolution Nasim Bajwa stood up to read out his resolution a large number of PPP lawyers led by Khurrum Latif Khan Khosa created pandemonium. They shouted full-throated slogans and made it impossible for him to read out his proposal. President Nasira Iqbal and other office bearers tried to control the situation and bring the house in order but their efforts ended in vain.
PPP lawyers went on rampage as they climbed on tables and chairs and started thumping tables and raising slogans in favour of president Zardari and against President SCBA Qazi Anwar. House was adjourned without having voting on the resolution.
PPP lawyers claimed that majority of black-coats have also dismissed Thursday's boycott call. Reacting on the situation, President Nasira Iqbal said certain unruly elements do not want any resolution to be presented and passed in an orderly manner. They wanted to bring the Bar into disrepute by creating commotion in the presence of media.
She said, they acted in total contravention of the Bar rules and displayed conduct unbecoming of double graduates who proved to be role models during two years of lawyers' movement. She added that if the meeting of the Bar could not be conducted in an orderly manner without damaging the property of the Bar, no meeting can yield any positive results.
