Nasir Khosa replaces Javed Mahmood as Punjab chief secretary

04 Feb, 2010

Punjab Chief Secretary Javed Mahmood, who is on official leave, has been replaced by Nasir Mahmood Khosa, Balochistan Chief Secretary on Wednesday. The Establishment Division, Islamabad, has issued notification in this regard. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has yet to issue a notification regarding posting of the new Chief Secretary, sources disclosed.
A few days back, Javed Mahmood had gone on an official leave in order to clear the impression that he was influencing the proceedings of the case with regard to a road accident with his car, which claimed the life of a retired army officer. An official handout stated that Javed Mahmood had applied for a leave, whereas sources say that the former Chief Secretary was forced to go on the leave by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
On temporary basis, Additional Chief Secretary Sami Saeed was given the additional charge of Chief Secretary Punjab, who was especially transferred from the post of Chairman Planning and Development Board Punjab. It may be recalled that Colonel (Retd) Ikram, on a motorbike, was hit by an official car that was driven by a driver, while Javed Mahmood was sitting on the back seat, and the officer sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to CMH where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sources believe that Javed Mahmood was transferred on the demand of late Colonel Ikram's family. They said during the visit of PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif to the deceased house, his family complained that the Chief Secretary was influencing the investigation and thus demanded his immediate transfer.
Nawaz Sharif promised to transfer him very soon, they added. Meanwhile, the new Chief Secretary Punjab Nasir Mahmood Khosa enjoys good relations with both Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, with whom he served as Additional Secretary to Prime Minister, and Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif, thus he has been posted to Punjab with their consent.
