Congress-man Charlie Wilson was a "remarkable individual, who by dint of his personality, persistence and passion helped change the course of global events," ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani said on Friday while condoling loss of the American lawmaker, who passed away this week.
"We are saddened at the death of Congressman Charlie Wilson... His name is inextricably linked to the struggle of the free world in reversing the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan," Haqqani said. He was referring to the lawmaker's role in securing Washington's support for the 1980s struggle against Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
"In him Pakistan and Pakistanis have lost a good friend who understood the land and loved its people. After his retirement he provided the Government of Pakistan with valuable services as lobbyist," the ambassador said, paying tribute to Wilson's long association with the country.
"The officers and staff of the Pakistan Embassy in Washington DC join me in extending our heartfelt condolences to Congressman Wilson's next of kin and his many friends. We pray that God grant them the courage to bear this loss with fortitude. May God bless his soul," he added.
