The Vice Chancellor's Executive Council of the University of Sindh has decided that apart from teaching the faculty members would devote 10 hours in a week to provide guidance and counselling to the students of their concerned teaching institutes and departments by sitting in their offices, the promotion of the teachers would also be linked with the academic excellence in teaching, research and also community services.
This was decided in 2nd meeting of Vice Chancellors' Executive Council, presided over by Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Dr Nazir A Mughal on Monday. The meeting has also approved to constitute a three-member committee at every department level to listen the students' complains and solve their problems. It further decided that on the first day of classes of new session the teachers would introduce their courses as well as teacher's achievements to the students.
The meeting has decided that each department with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty will give one symposium during every semester. The meeting approved the formation of a committee at department level which will recommend the names of the deserving faculty on merit and on basis of teaching, research and community services and University wide high level committee comprising one member from each Faculty to review the same cases for recommendation for promotion in next higher grade for placing before the selection board meeting.
The meeting also decided that during on going classes in the University teachers will not proceed for invigilation duties or any leave unless any emergency. The meeting also discussed the academic and research activities at the departments and decided that departmental level meeting would be convened twice semester and when ever need for the promotion and improvement of the quality of education.
The meeting also discussed the research facilities, leave procedure of the University teachers and evaluation of teachers on basis of their teaching and research performances. The meeting also approved establishment of a "Faculty Grievances Committee" through a democratic process to listen and share the grievances of the faculty members.
The Vice Chancellor addressing on the occasion informed the meeting that the Prime Minister during his meeting with the Vice Chancellors of the Universities has promised 7 percent GDP during next five years for the education. He said that the purpose of the meeting with Prime Minister was only one point agenda ie budget concerned of the Universities.
The Prime Minister giving high respect to the Vice Chancellor assured for it. Dr Mughal on this occasion emphasised the need of the active role of the Deans of the Faculties and said that his priority is the students first. He said that academic freedom, shared governance and tenure on fundamental rights are also his priorities to boost up the academic activities and research in the University to upgrade its standard.
