In a handover ceremony to NWFP Inspector General Malik Naveed on Monday, the US donated eight armoured personnel carriers valued at Rs 125.8 million ($1,480,000) and surveillance equipment (binoculars, global positioning systems, night-vision binoculars and monoculars, and solar panels) valued at Rs 13.6 million ($160,000) for the NWFP Elite Force.
These vehicles and surveillance equipment will support the NWFP Elite Force professionals who are on the front lines in the fight against extremism. Consul General Candace Putnam remarked "The United States, particularly those of us in Consulate General Peshawar, appreciates the sacrifices of the NWFP Police in protecting and defending the people of Peshawar and the entire province. We hope that this donation will help the police to continue their courageous efforts." The US supports civilian law enforcement in Pakistan through equipment, training, and refurbishment/rehabilitation of police facilities.-PR
