Jamaat-i-Islami calls for mid-term elections

03 Mar, 2010

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Secretary General Liaquat Baloch has said that the system of allies ruling and divided mandate had failed in the country and the situation calls for fresh elections.
The Constitution has no provision for mid-term elections while military intervention would be undesirable, therefore, either the Prime Minister should propose dissolution of the National Assembly or the political leadership should itself decide fresh polls, he said at a press conference at Mirpur khas, on Tuesday, quoted a JIP press statement issued.
The winding up of local bodies by an elected government has created a justification for dissolution of the elected assemblies, he argued. He said the government should give full powers to the Election Commission and announce schedule for Local Bodies elections without any delay. However, he said, he had serious doubts about government's intentions on this score. Liaquat Baloch said the violence on 12th of Rabiul Awal at Faisalabad and D.I. Khan indicated provincial governments' failure.
