'Arabic language vital to eliminate scourge of sectarianism, terrorism'

03 Mar, 2010

Vice-Chancellor Punjab University Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran has stated that knowledge of Arabic language is not only essential for eliminating the scourge of sectarianism and terrorism but also for attaining an honourable place in the comity of nations.
He was addressing the participants of one-day international seminar on 'The Role of Arabic Language in the Unity of Muslim Ummah', held at Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre here on Tuesday. Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran said that it would be a matter of great honour and pride to promote academic and cultural links between the PU and Al-Azhar University. He pointed it is very difficult to assess the influence and impact of Islamic scholars and religious Ulema who have qualified from Al-Azhar University.
The vice-chancellor observed that despite having achieved the status of first atomic power in the Islamic world, the rank of Pakistan in the field of scientific research and development comes after brother Muslim countries such as Turkey, Iran and Egypt. Egypt is spending 4 percent of its GDP on education promotion, which is two-times the budget being spent by Pakistan on this vital sector, he added.
He directed the concerned authorities to immediately finalise the recommendations of the committee already set up for promoting the teachings of Arabic language. The source of Islam is dependent upon the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah that are in the Arabic language and without them, nobody can even think of Islam, he articulated.
vice-chancellor Al-Azhar University Professor Dr Ismaeel Abdul Nabi Jawad, while highlighting the significance of Arabic language, remarked that comprehension of Arabic is a must for the survival and renaissance of Islam, rather Islam itself is incomplete and non-existent without the Arabic language. It is incumbent upon every believer to read and understand the Holy Qur'an, which is not possible without the knowledge of Arabic language, he stressed.
