New Zealand dollar steady above one-week lows

08 Mar, 2010

The New Zealand dollar steadied above one-week lows against the US dollar on Friday, pressured by reduced risk appetite and prolonged weakness against the Australian dollar.
Kiwi settles little changed around $0.6850/60 level, just above a one-week low, and about a third of a cent lower than late local Thursday levels. Support seen from $0.6800 with resistance at initially at $0.6880 and then $0.6900.
NZ dollar still under pressure against the Aussie, extending its five-day slide to near a decade low of A$0.7611, about 2.5 percent lower than the start of the week, and is likely to test interim support around A$0.7583.
The kiwi has fallen on diverging views on the New Zealand and Australian economies. Australia's central bank this week raised rates with more increases flagged, while fourth quarter growth came in ahead of expectations.
