Renaming of NWFP: ball now in PML-N court: ANP

19 Mar, 2010

Senator and spokesperson of Awami National Party (ANP) Zahid Khan on Thursday said that constitutional reforms package would not be presented to the parliament until the matter of renaming North West Frontier Province (NWFP) is resolved.
While talking to Business Recorder, Zahid Khan said that Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) committed in the last meeting of the Committee that a meeting would be arranged for the ANP leader Asfandyar Wali Khan and PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif after the latter's arrival. He further said that Nawaz Sharif has now arrived and it is now up to them to inform ANP of the meeting to resolve the issue of the naming province as Pukhtoonkhwa with consensus.
"There is nothing more we can do in the matter," Zahid Khan said, adding that ANP has finalised all its recommendations and the ball is now in the court of PML (N). He further said that ANP has proposed three names ie Pukhtoonkhwa, Afghania and Pakhtoonistan while PML-N proposed the names of Khyber, Abaseen and Neelab.
Both the parties tried to convince each other to reach consensus on the name proposed by them but have not succeeded so far. He said that now the matter has been referred to the heads of both the parties as without their intervention it could not be resolved.
