Federal and provincial research institutes have agreed to co-ordinate their efforts for developing a high yielding, short duration hybrid and open pollinated Canola seed to increase the per acre yield of the farmer. The decision to this effect was taken at a high profile meeting held here in the Committee Room of Agriculture House regarding the promotion of canola cultivation for enhancing the production of local edible oil.
The meeting was chaired by the Managing Director, Pakistan Oilseed Development Board (PODB), Ministry of Food & Agriculture, Government of Pakistan, said a spokesman of the PODB, here on Friday. Scientists from the leading agriculture research institutes of the country and representatives of private seed companies in the meeting gave their valuable suggestion for the enhancement of canola production.
In the meeting, it was agreed that all the provincial and federal research institutes will co-ordinate to develop high yielding, short duration hybrid and open pollinated canola seed to increase the per acre yield of the farmers. It was also decided that necessary steps for provision of farm machinery and strengthening of marketing channel would be taken for sustainable production of the crop, the spokesman informed. The canola crop is being harvested nowadays and in the market, it is being procured at the rate of Rs 1800/- to Rs 2000/- per 40 kg. The house showed satisfaction on the present canola market price, he concluded.
